Email to Greek minister for justice

 Dear Mr Nikoloas-Georgios

It has come to my attention that a young man named Matthew Cryer was killed in Laganas, Zante, Greece on the 21st of July 2008. He was just 17 years old.

A UK coroners inquest was held on the 27th of May 2009 a verdict of unlawful killing by persons unknown was recorded. At that inquest it emerged that several witness saw him being abused by the door staff of a bar called cocktails and dreams. He was thrown from halfway down a steep flight of metal stairs and witnesses also saw him being punched, he died shortly after wards outside on the pavement from head injuries. It was noted at the inquest that Matthew was not causing any trouble and though he had had a drink his blood alcohol level though raised was not a significant factor in his death.

It was also reported that two policemen who arrived on the scene shortly after the assault did nothing to help Mr Cryer and were even intimidated into not taking witness statements by the aggressive door staff. An ambulance took over 1 hour to arrive and was inadequately equipped.

As far as is known in the UK, Mr Cryers death has never been investigated by the Greek police. We join his family in asking for a comprehensive police investigation, where the door staff are identified and taken to trial. We also ask that your government look at legislating and training its door staff to similar standard as those in the UK

Thousands of young people travel to Greece every year, bringing with them a boost to your economy we ask that you look after the tourists that have served your country so well. Young British tourists have been portrayed by your countrymen as loutish unruly thugs, whilst a minority may behave in this way we know most don't and those that do have been fuelled by bar owners encouraging the excessive consumption of cheap low grade alcohol, who are ready to take your money and do not care about the consequences. We ask that the sale of alcohol be further legislated and that current legislation is enforced.

I ask that you take my concerns seriously and act upon them

I anticipate your response

Respectfully
